My previous laptop computer was an Acer Aspire 5 A515-54-51D1. It was working fine until an incident combining a bad update to the EFI component of Grub (the bootloader) plus BIOS corruption, which I could not recover from. (More details under Selection.) I had to write off the machine.

The workload that I expect to do on the replacement includes software development, system administration, document preparation, web page design, and photo editing. In addition I have a virtual machine for development which belongs on the laptop. If I have compute-intensive tasks that push beyond the laptop's CPU or memory limits, I either use one of my non-lap machines, or temporarily rent a VM in the cloud. Nonetheless, the way the selection is going, the replacement laptop is likely to be the fastest machine in the house.

The replacement I picked is an ASUS VivoBook S15 S532FA-DH55; see here for details and a link to the ASUS product page. It was reasonably easy to set up with Linux, and is serving my needs admirably.
