Requirements for the New Baobei

Ben's Suggestions

Ben looked through some systems and suggested these:

Lenovo IdeaCentre Mini (1L Intel) Desktop

This product series looks kind of expensive, and the referent page was not friendly delivering needed information. But I searched on Amazon and the next one looked interesting.

Lenovo ThinkCentre Business Mini Desktop, Intel Core Processor etc. etc.

Basic specs:

The Dell Inspiron 3020 product line are in tower cases and have kind of high prices. Mixed in are those in small desktop cases, about 12 x 12 x 3in. Processors are 13th gen.

The Dell Inspiron 3020 product line are similar to the 3020's but $100 or so more.

The ASUS NUC Product Line

Intel has sold the NUC product line to ASUS. Let's see what they have. On Amazon, the 13th gen ones are available. The ones with 14th gen processors are all temporarily out of stock, i.e. announced but not actually shipping. SBSF Amazon. The processor type is unavailable (i.e. not decided yet), hiss, boo.

ASUS weebsite, NUC overview page. ASUS NUC Products are Ready!

This website has lots of product hype but very little useful information. ASUS press release: We expect that limited availability of these ASUS NUCs will begin in the latter half of May 2024, with full availability beginning inn June or July.

Tidbit from another press release dated 2024-03-27: Announcing the hottest, lastest models. Up to 96Gb of DDRS 5600 SO-DIMM memory. (Very fast.)

Conclusion: I should be looking at the gen 13 NUCs. On Amazon, search terms: NUC 13 Mini PC. Restriction: Free shipping by Amazon. 87 hits. Here's a list of hits that look semi-credible.

Intel 2023 NUC 13 Pro NUC13ANKI5 Arena Canyon Mini PC, Core i5-1340P, Barebone

2023 Intel NUC 13 Pro,NUC13ANHi5 Versatile Mini PC 16GB RAM&512GB SSD with Core i5-1340 Processor

Lots of Others

There are lots of NUC13ANHi5 or i7 with various RAM, SSD and price, and some but fewer NUC12WSHi7. None are sold by Amazon's own account. Geekom has imitations at (slightly) lower prices, which Amazon promotes in the listing. There are no other 13 or 12 gen NUC models, at least among the first 24 listings.

There are no ASUS NUCs at all, at least with these search terms. There are no 14th gen NUCs either, from any vendor.

I think detailed reading of the competitors' offerings is not going to be productive.

Component prices for the old Diamond, 2017-12-xx:

Current Diamond, as of 2021-11-18, Intel NUC11PAHi5; RAM 16Gb; SSD 256Gb NVMe PCIe gen4. Price (bundled): $759.99

The bundled machine from Geekplus, NUC13ANHi5 with 16Gb RAM, 512Gb SSD, costs $699 which is less than Diamond in 2021.

But I'm afraid of getting za-pai components. Checking prices on the memory and disc:

If I got the barebones version, how much would it cost? RAM (Corsair) $34.99 + disc (Samsung) $19.26 = $54.25, plus Windows license. The barebones version plus RAM and disc costs $149 less than the complete package.
